Dynamo and Shakhtar in the 1/8 finals: how the giants played at this stage before
The main attractions of Ukrainian club football – Dynamo Kiev and Shakhtar Donetsk – will soon play their matches within the 1/8 finals of the Europa League.
The Kyivans will meet with the Spanish club Villarreal, and Shakhtar will have an away match against the Italian Roma.
This is not the first time the teams will play at this stage of the tournament. Shakhtar is the current semi-finalist of the Europa League. ISPORT recalls how Dynamo and Shakhtar ended their last confrontation in the 1/8 finals of the Europa League and UEFA Cup.
Dynamo Kyiv
In the 1989/90 season, Dynamo played in the 1/8 finals of the UEFA Cup, in which they lost to Fiorentina. In the next almost 20 years, the people of Kiev very rarely found themselves in this tournament, mainly speaking in the Champions League.
Season-2008/09, Metalist Kharkiv
For the first time, the people of Kiev reached the stage of the 1/8 finals of the UEFA Cup during the time of independent Ukraine only in 2009. That season can be considered the most successful in the European Cup history of Ukraine.
In the 1/8 finals, Dynamo got rivals from another Ukrainian club – Metalist. As part of the two-legged battle, the teams exchanged home victories, but thanks to the away goals rule, it was the Kievans who went further.
